Kay Stephens is a Maine freelance writer, an award-winning journalist, author, and a screenwriter with a specialty in arts, entertainment, and the creative economy. She holds a B.A. in magazine journalism from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and an M.A. in writing and publishing from Emerson College,

As a journalist, she is the founding reporter for the Midcoast newspaper, Penobscot Bay Pilot, and its magazine, The Wave, since it launched in 2011. She also written for the original Village Soup and its magazine, TheScene, as well as Dispatch Magazine, Bangor Metro, and Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors. She is also is the Managing Editor for three Maine magazines: Maine Brew & Bev Guide, Activities Guide of Maine, and Maine Health & Wellness Guide. Additionally, she has worked for several Maine digital marketing agencies, writing content to promote local businesses, artists, and creatives.

As an author, she has been traditionally, indie, and hybrid published. Her debut lobstering novel, The Ghost Trap, (Leapfrog Press, 2009) was adapted into an independent feature film in 2024. She additionally served as the film's screenwriter and an executive producer. The book was re-released with a new film cover in 2024 and the film won three awards for "Best Feature." Her latest novel, By the Dark o' the Moon, was published by Maine Authors Publishing in 2025.
