Sometimes a weekend explodes with all kinds of things to do. Sometimes...tumbleweeds. This weekend the action isn't even on a weekend. It's Thursday. Today! Three not-to-miss killer acts.

Rockland
Lincoln Street Center
7-9 pm

The Lincoln Street monthly Coffeehouse and Open Mic will feature BreadRose, Thursday September 16th, 7-9pm at the Lincoln Street Center, 24 Lincoln Street in Rockland. The first hour is an open mic, followed by BreadRose's performance, then an open jam at 9. Those interested in playing the open mic should arrive by 6:45 - poetry and spoken word are welcome. All-ages and ch...em free, there is a $2-5 sliding admission; refreshments are provided.

BreadRose formed in 2009 in Bangor, Maine as the union of three musicians who share a yearning to reach beyond the dominant order(s) in music, society, culture, and our way of life. Rockland native Martin Chartrand and Joe Gates have performed solo as a musician, songwriter, or poet; together, they make melody, songs, spoken poetry, and noise that amplifies our spiritual, political, and emotional anger and love, dismay and inspiration. Their name hails from the eloquence of young immigrant women textile workers in Lawrence, MA who demanded from their bosses "Not just bread, but roses too!" and speaks to the connection between creativity, love, beauty and our most basic needs. Learn more at http://www.myspace.com/breadrose .

Camden
Cuzzy's Restaurant
8:00 pm

Okay, this is not just Thursday Karaoke Night, it is THE place to be in Camden on a Thursday night. I have it on good authority from the schooner bums at The Appledore that this is the best place to be when you want to see the karaoke gamut range from folks thinking they are on an American Idol tryout to the worst rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody you ever heard.

Belfast
Roots and Tendrils
7:30 pm

On Thursday, September 16th, The Pleasants and Momentary Prophets will perform at Roots & Tendrils in downtown Belfast.

THE PLEASANTS
Click here to listen to The Pleasants

Musical duo The Pleasants was born in the green mountains of Vermont in 2009. Mixing equal parts whiskey, dusty earth, and spring water, musicians Amanda Rogers and Mike Matta evoke a strange sense of longing for simpler times.  Sometimes described as intense folk or recession rock, but best described as "Indie Grunge", the Pleasants weave together music familiar yet altogether new.

Do It Together Records released the Pleasants' first record, "Forests and Fields," in the United States this past June. Releases in Europe and Japan will follow this fall.  The duo's stop in Belfast comes in between their US summer tour and this winter's European tour.

MOMENTARY PROPHETS
Click here to listen to Momentary Prophets

Momentary Prophets is an alternative folk jam trio from Manassas, Tennessee. The trio's strong tie to the wonders and ineffable dream-moments of life is the primary force behind their writing and art. On tour since 2009, the group strives to connect with every audience they encounter and has built a reputation for highly energetic and engaging performances.

Show starts at 7:30PM. Please bring $6 for the musicians.

Awesomeocalypse--it's here!!
August 27, 7:30PM-10:00PM
TONGUE-IN-CHEEK PRESENTATIONS! MUSIC! DEAD-SERIOUS DISASTER PREPAREDNESS!

Yes, Rock City Books and Coffee is at it again. The zany jesters who brought you Mortification are now testing your resolve in a worst-case-scenario evening of entertainment! Addressing pressing questions such as:
  • "What should I do in the likely event of a robot uprising?"
  • "How do I find clean water, food, light and energy sources post-disaster?"
  • "What will the remnants of our society look like to a future archaeologist?"

Additional fun features to the evening according to one of the organizers, Lacy, will involve a worst-case scenario role-playing session with volunteers from the audience as well as a post-apocalyptic jam sesh with "found" instruments. Nothing electrical--remember this is the apocalypse. "So if you are wandering around in a dystopic haze and find push pins in a baby jar," says Lacy, "that will be exactly the type of instrument we are looking for in this jam."

AND EVER SO MUCH MORE!

Because there's no reason preparing for disaster shouldn't be super fun.

Audience discretion is advised, as some language or topics may not be suitable for everyone. For more information, call Lacy or Erica at 594.4123

Rock City Books & Coffee.Advance tickets: $3 or 4 for $10 / At the door: $4

If you live in Maine, you can get a lobster anywhere, but one of the best things about The Maine Lobster Festival  worth seeing is the Atwood Crate Races and the bands. Sign up to volunteer just a few hours in the Marine Experience Tent, the Children’s Tent or at the Entrance Gates and get free admission into the festival for that day.

Motor Booty Affair
Thursday, August 5

This is the kickoff disco show for the Maine Lobster Festival--kind of an odd choice next to their traditional bluesy, country lineup, but if you've ever seen the Booty in action, it is a great dance party. Afro wigs and platform shoes suggested style of dress. Free with price of admission -$8. Thursday nights show will not have seating as there will be dance space provided.

If youngsters show up, he has songs to lead them on the right path too. Some of Cannon's songs were written while on the dangerous and lonely road working as a mime. Are you freaking kidding me? I have to see this guy.

Mike Doughty, The Strand
Sunday, August 8
8 pm

American Indie and Alternative singer/song-writer Mike Doughty will perform at the Strand Theatre in Rockland on Sunday August 8 at 8pm.

Already it's the ides of July and as I'm swimming in an absolutely uncrowded Maine cool, clear lake on a sunny day looking up at the mountains, I'm thinking....what I wouldn't give at this moment to be stuck in a sweaty subway in a city listening to some nose breather next to me. Right?

At The Killer Convo, I try to find the most interesting, fun-fun-fun things for you to do and see each weekend (no garden tours, no baroque concerts--I said fun!!)  So this weekend it depends on whether the weather will cooperate, but not to worry. We've got indoor and outdoor fun things to do. Let's get started.

Already the ides of July and as I'm swimming in an absolutely uncrowded Maine cool, clear lake on a sunny day looking up at the mountains, I'm thinking....this sucks. I wish I were stuck in a sweaty subway in a city listening to some nose breather next to me.

Oh, by the way, I was told this week that the title "Killer Convo" is off-putting to my audience. Because it implies that I've killed you with my words. Does anyone feel strongly about this? Did anyone alert Roberta Flack?

So this weekend it depends on whether the weather will cooperate, but not to worry. We've got indoor and outdoor fun things to do. Let's get started.

Pecha Kucha, Mortified & Destroyed Books As Art

6/23/2010

f you have an event you'd like to see mentioned in the Killer Convo, fan us on Facebook or email me directly.

Short post today cuz my mammy is coming into town. If you're ever looking for cool places to take out-of-staters and to rhetorically answer their ever-present question, "Why do you live here?" You say: "Cocktail hour offered by Point Lookout every Wednesday from 4-6 pm." It's not something they advertise--but it's open to everyone and that's why I'm bringing it to you in The Killer Convo.  Sipping a 'tini at the top of Ducktrap Mountain overlooking the islands of Penobscot Bay almost makes living here in February worth it.

Okay, here's the roundup. Some wonky stuff this weekend,  the way we likes it.

Appleton Library
Thursday, June 24 6:30-8:30 pm
If you like found art or mixed media projects, this is a terribly creative way to destroy and recreate an old book. An Altered Books Art Project with Carolyn Brown will be offered at the Appleton library June 24, July 1 and July 8. Brown will also offer a Science Fiction/Fantasy Art experience on July 22, July 29 and Aug. 5; both art sessions will be held at the library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will include all materials and instruction. Enrollment at each session is limited to 15 students with a commitment to attend all three classes. Students can register by calling the library at 785-5656.

Mortified- Rock City Books and Coffee
Friday, June 25 8 pm
We've all been waiting for this. This is shaping up to be a night of hilarity--so prepare to witness total middle school humiliation as entertainment! See my my earlier post for more details.

*Witness adults performing excerpts from adolescent journals, letters, poems, lyrics, stories and more.
*Bad Teen Poetry Slam: Bring your worst poem from your teen years and compete for prizes—whichever is voted by the audience as the worst will triumph!
*Live music featuring acoustic renderings of songs you loved to hate and couldn’t help but love when you were 14
*Special food & drinks for the event, and deals on Mortified books

Pecha Kucha-Tarratine Bingo Hall
Friday, June 25, Belfast, 7 pm
Rivaling Mortified this evening is the second 2010 Pecha Kucha Night in midcoast Maine on Friday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at the Tarratine Tribe/Bingo Hall, 153 Main Street in Belfast. Eight individuals have been chosen to give a fast-paced presentation on their work, showing 20 images for 20 seconds each, to be followed by discussion and socializing. Light refreshments will be served. Pecha Kucha Night is open to the public; doors open at 6 p.m. There is a $5 admission fee.

Saturday June 26, Rockport Harbor
12-4 pm
Kastle Funkton Entertainment presents an all ages concert. Bring chairs/blankets/food to grill and enjoy the beauty of Rockport Harbor. There is no rain date for this, so let's hope for some great summer weather! Great local musicians to perform (all styles of music, from funk to folk to tribal and jazz) Performance art and children's art table. Bring out the whole family (even that bent out of shape uncle), your groove slippers and have fun. Raffle prizes, laughter and sunshine!!! This is a free event w/ donations welcome(please support your local musicians) For more info, please contact John Orlando on Facebook or [email protected] .......................... eya at the harbah!!!

Stay tuned for the art walks next week in Belfast and Rockland! Art, free wine. Fun, fun!

Live At Night at the Farnsworth
Party For The Public!
June 11, 7-8 pm in the Farnsworth Library.
All right, if you are anything like me, any time there is a free party for the public (I don't care if it's promoting arts or not) I'm there. It's sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank and sort of a fete to celebrate painter Alex Katz' new work. You can see his huge-scale painting here. This will probably dressy dressy, but there will be a cash bar, and hors d'oeuvres served from Bells and Whistles and light jazz from the Hal Hagy band.

Rock City Coffee's Velvet Lounge
Summer Concert Series--also FREE
7- 9 pm
If you're looking for more dressy down than dressy up, Friday night's event features one half of Hot Pink Flannel as DJ Safety Scissors. Erica will be spinning an electric mix of indie folk rock with undertones of electronica to support the book Indie Rock Coloring Book, which supports music in local areas. Should be really fun! You can find out more info at 594-4123 or find them on Facebook at Rock City Coffee.

Reggae at The Boathouse
Sunday June 13, 3-6 pm
With Natty B & Tim D
No cover, hope it's a sunny day! Even if it's not it will be a party at Boathouse Restaurant and Raw Bar. Dub, Reggae, Dancehall--it's always a good time with Natty B. Welcome to summah!

Saving the best for last....

Grow Your Own Drink Garden
The other night I toddled on over to my friend Ladleah Dunn's place to check out her gardens. Being thin Irish-skinned, the black flies were making corned beef hash of my neck. Screw that noise. So we sat on her porch instead as she showed me all of the vegetation surrounding her house. Lo and behold, it wasn't just random plant matter, it was a veritable cornucopia of herbs that she and her husband Shane use to infuse homemade spirits. And whenever they feel like dressing up a boring old martini, they just come out to this "Drink Garden" and pluck away. What Ladleah uses is:
  • Pineapple Mint-good for Mojitos
  • Pineapple Sage-rum and vodkas
  • Woolly Apple Mint-Mojitos, vodkas
  • Lime Basil--good for gins
  • Wormwood- good for brewing home made beer (which they also do).

Wormwood is also used for Absinthe--but, you're not allowed to actually make Absinthe because it is a controlled substance. (The wormwood contains a chemical known as thujone that is thought to be slightly psychoactive. ) Who knew?  Best places to find these strange herbs to put in your own Drink Garden: The Green Thumb, Barley Joe Farm Greenhouse, Moose Crossing Garden Center, and Merryspring's Annual Plant Sale. Says Ladleah:  "Best to keep the herbage close to the front porch for ease of harvest- key point."

Brain dumpings

6/3/2010

A while back I had a boss who had a pet word she liked to use in meetings: Brain dump. As in: "We need to get the fiscal department to do a brain dump of these numbers so we can aggregate them for the report." Then one day, she gathered us all up and said casually, "Okay everybody, we need to do one big dump right here." Naturally, you can understand my aversion to this word.

So, sometimes you have to face the thing you least desire. Here's a  big fat brain dump of rad happenings that are sprouting up all over the place.

Dip Net Seafood Co. -Breaking News-
Wheeeee! So excited. Okay, you've been waiting for it--we all have. Ever since Scott Yankovenko reluctantly had to close his Port Clyde location (currently now
"The Dip Net" run by Linda Bean's Prefect Maine) we've all been waiting and watching to see when the new Dip Net would open. Sometimes next week, Dip Net Seafood Company will open its doors in the old Zaddik's restaurant location in Camden. As Scott told me, " 'The Dip Net' was actually the name of the business for 40 years obviously before I took it over. So, the name went with the lease and the property. Still, I think I added a lot to it, so I'm taking it part of it with me." As Scott and the crew  ready for the opening he says, "We're excited. It was nice to take a sabbatical in New York and San Francisco for a year to sample some different foods, but essentially the menu you all knew will be the same." FYI: Scott is looking for fun, cool waitstaff to apply and a slate or soapstone sink for the raw bar. You can find him under Facebook and send a direct message.

Spirit of Sound--"Promoting Peace Thru Music." Do you guys all remember when the record store Wild Rufus was owned by Byron Greatorex and located in the Camden harbor? (I sure do because that was one of my 15,000 places I had worked at one time.) Well we all know Natty B owns Wild Rufus up in Belfast, but Byron is back and better than ever with a small grassroots shop in the back of Merchant's Cooperative (you know that antique store next to Camden House of Pizza?) The shop is called "Spirit of Sound Records" and he specializes in rare and unusual vinyl. He's a jazz aficiondo as well, so you can find some rare jazz there. I've known Bryon a long time. He's a cool cat and he really does promote peace through music. Check it out sometime.

Mortified!
Rock City Books and Coffee are debuting a sick form of embarrassingly funny entertainment that takes all your self-absorbed, pathetic high school journal mewlings and reworks them for our audience glee. Says organizer Lacy, "There were so many mortifying things in my high school years, how to choose? My first day in 9th grade, I decided to rock a 'new look.' I had mail ordered discount foundation--cause in those days you mail ordered all your makeup--but I had no idea what my skin tone was. So I went to school with this orange mask and this distinctive line all the way under my chin. Years later, people were still like, 'What was that all about?'"

Are you between the ages of 22-40, and looking to exorcise some demons from your teen years? We just happen to have a way to help you do that. On Friday, June 25th, Rock City is offering up ‘Night of Shame: A Tribute to Mortified’, and we need some volunteer performers.

What’s Mortified, you ask? We answer: it’s a comic excavation of the strange and extraordinary things we created as young adults. Since we can’t travel to New York or California to see one of their shows, we’re putting on our very own. What to expect:

*Witness adults performing excerpts from adolescent journals, letters, poems, lyrics, stories and more.

*Bad Teen Poetry Slam: Bring your worst poem from your teen years and compete for prizes—whichever is voted by the audience as the worst will triumph!

*Live music featuring acoustic renderings of songs you loved to hate and couldn’t help but love when you were 14

*Special food & drinks for the event, and deals on Mortified books

If you’re interested in volunteering to perform one of the selected stories, please get in touch with Lacy at [email protected] (We’ve indicated the 22-40 age range for performers because we’re focusing on the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s.)
