Awesomeocalypse--it's here!!
August 27, 7:30PM-10:00PM
TONGUE-IN-CHEEK PRESENTATIONS! MUSIC! DEAD-SERIOUS DISASTER PREPAREDNESS!

Yes, Rock City Books and Coffee is at it again. The zany jesters who brought you Mortification are now testing your resolve in a worst-case-scenario evening of entertainment! Addressing pressing questions such as:
  • "What should I do in the likely event of a robot uprising?"
  • "How do I find clean water, food, light and energy sources post-disaster?"
  • "What will the remnants of our society look like to a future archaeologist?"

Additional fun features to the evening according to one of the organizers, Lacy, will involve a worst-case scenario role-playing session with volunteers from the audience as well as a post-apocalyptic jam sesh with "found" instruments. Nothing electrical--remember this is the apocalypse. "So if you are wandering around in a dystopic haze and find push pins in a baby jar," says Lacy, "that will be exactly the type of instrument we are looking for in this jam."

AND EVER SO MUCH MORE!

Because there's no reason preparing for disaster shouldn't be super fun.

Audience discretion is advised, as some language or topics may not be suitable for everyone. For more information, call Lacy or Erica at 594.4123

Rock City Books & Coffee.Advance tickets: $3 or 4 for $10 / At the door: $4

Spotlight On Artists: Meet Tim Sully Sullivan

For correctly identifying the artist behind this picture, meet the very jovial, very talented Tim "Sully" Sullivan, who hosts Rockland's R Space. Here is little bit more you need to know about Tim...

You host R Space at the Lincoln Street Center for the Arts and Education. Tell us a bit about what its purpose is, what the name means and why you got that going.

Basically, R Space is about bringing modern music (a.k.a, rock 'n' roll) to the midcoast youth, to give them something to do 'round here. Eventually, we will do some after-school education, from playing an instrument to doing sound for a show. Mission: R Space will present music and performing and visual art for the youth of our community in a safe environment, free from alcohol and other drugs.

What was the first concert you ever went to? Why is music such a passion of yours?

The first concert I saw was in 6th grade - KISS in Portland (probably '81). I started playing drums around then...and haven't stopped. Music is the language of the soul...we need it to sustain our Selves.

How long have you lived in Maine? What do you think about Rockland's music scene as it has evolved?

I grew up in Alfred (southern Maine) and have lived in the midcoast for the last 10 years. My first reaction to the "Rockland music scene" is "WHAT music scene?" but we do have some good stuff going on besides R Space, particularly for a town of only 8,000. Paul Benjamin brings in world-class blues musicians, every Monday at Time Out Pub and of course the Blues Festival which is amazing...absolutely amazing. It's great that the Strand is doing shows - and some big national acts. The bars have some live entertainment which really helps fill things out here. And I think the busking in Rockland has increased, despite the police crackdown on it. There have been rock shows in Rockland, but they usually don't last too long. We've been doing this since February, with shows about every other week.

Tell us about The Have Nots. Looks like a rad band.

The ska band Have Nots from Boston have been touring with the Dropkick Murphys recently, and will be appearing with The Swinging Utters and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones this fall. It's hard to express enough how awesome this show on the 21st is going to be (which is at the Rockland Rec Center)...but it's best to listen to them and hear for yourself: www.facebook.com/havenots

By the way, The Have Nots are playing this Saturday night. Do something a little different this weekend. Check out the show!

If you live in Maine, you can get a lobster anywhere, but one of the best things about The Maine Lobster Festival  worth seeing is the Atwood Crate Races and the bands. Sign up to volunteer just a few hours in the Marine Experience Tent, the Children’s Tent or at the Entrance Gates and get free admission into the festival for that day.

Motor Booty Affair
Thursday, August 5

This is the kickoff disco show for the Maine Lobster Festival--kind of an odd choice next to their traditional bluesy, country lineup, but if you've ever seen the Booty in action, it is a great dance party. Afro wigs and platform shoes suggested style of dress. Free with price of admission -$8. Thursday nights show will not have seating as there will be dance space provided.

Book signing The Ghost Trap
Friday, August 6, 2010
4pm

No, it's not all about lobster this weekend. But, if you happen to be in Rockland Friday afternoon, come by and see me at The Reading Corner. I'll be sitting outside with my big ole lobster trap signing copies of The Ghost Trap.

Art Party for The Portland Pins
These guys ask local artists to submit their own hand-made designs for 1-inch buttons, then they mix the end results all up in a gumball machine so people could buy great, unique artwork. So...apparently there will be a party for this.

And music  musicians Kelly Ravin and The Loblolly Boy will play at Roots & Tendrils in Belfast.

Kelly Ravin was born and raised In Brooks, Maine. There he honed his musical skills after his mother passed down his grandmother’s guitar on his ninth birthday. Ravin relocated to northern Vermont at 18 and has since been steadily on the road touring. The Loblolly Boy is Luke Kalloch, a Round Pond, Maine native who’s music has brought him all over the country and most recently landed him in that magnet of music towns, Austin, Texas. how starts at 8:30. Please bring $5 for the musicians. Roots & Tendrils is located at 2 Cross Street in downtown Belfast. For more information visit www.rootsandtendrils.com or call 207-338-5225.

Velvet Lounge hosts Cannon
Friday, Aug. 6
7-9 pm

Scot Cannon of Belfast will perform in the Velvet Lounge series at Rock City Books & Coffee, 328 Main St., Rockland. The music will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Cannon performs his own acoustic versions of jazz and pop standards and also sings from his collection of mildly sarcastic and sometimes moving original songs. If youngsters show up, he has songs to lead them on the right path too. Some of Cannon's songs were written while on the dangerous and lonely road working as a mime. Are you freaking kidding me? I have to see this guy.

Mike Doughty, The Strand
Sunday, August 8
8 pm

American Indie and Alternative singer/song-writer Mike Doughty will perform at the Strand Theatre in Rockland on Sunday August 8 at 8pm.

Doughty first rose to the public eye as the front man and lead singer for the jazzy/electronic, not-quite-mainstream band Soul Coughing in the mid-90’s

Since leaving Soul Couching, Doughty has developed a strong and flourishing solo career, and has since returned to his acoustic roots on his latest recording, Sad Man, Happy Man.

So that's it guys. Have a stellar one. By the way, be on the lookout for my new postcard (below) in the area and sign up to be a fan on Facebook and Twitter.
